Resveralife Look Well: Makeup Tips for Acne Prone Skin

It would be wonderful if you could use some magic potion and rid your skin of pimples and blemishes. Sadly, there is no such magic cream or face wash that will give your acne prone skin and immediately flawless face. Luckily, there is makeup. Covering up your pimples and zits may seem daunting or overwhelming, but there are some tricks that beauty insiders know to help ensure your makeup application isn’t too heavy, cakey or unrealistic looking. This Resveralife Look Well Guide has a list of the top tips for applying makeup to your acne prone skin.

Woman cleansing her skin with a cleansing pad.

Prep and Prime
You know that you should always apply makeup to a clean face. Also, you should wash your hands just before applying your makeup. If you have acne prone skin, the last thing you want to do is introduce more bacteria to your face. A clean face and clean hands help reduce the chance of spreading further bacteria. Next, if you want to, use a toner that is free of alcohol. A toner can help soak up excess oil prior to makeup application. Finally, make sure your skin is well moisturized because this helps your makeup glide on more smoothly and evenly.

Foundation and Concealer
Before you can apply makeup, you have to select it and when you opt for the best makeup types for acne prone skin, it makes application that much easier. Renowned skin expert Paula Begoun suggests several formulas that generally work very well on acne prone skin. In all of your makeup, from foundation to bronzer, there are certain things to avoid. Begoun advises that it is very important to avoid alcohol-based or fragrance loaded  skincare or makeup products. Because alcohol is drying, it actually stimulates the skin to produce more oil, which is definitely not what you want. Additionally, Begoun suggests that you stay away from thick formulations such as creams, sticks, pancake makeup or cream-to-powder formulas. That advice is not only for your foundation, but all of your products like blush, bronzer and concealer.

So what formulations do work for acne prone skin? Begoun suggests using liquid foundations such as Urban Decay Naked Skin or Rimmel London Stay Matte. While you might be inclined to heavily cover your face with makeup, experts advise strongly against this. Famed makeup artist Lisa Eldridge recommends finding a medium coverage foundation that sheers out well and leaves your skin looking like, well, skin. She states that you should put on your foundation without worrying about your spots, but just to achieve an even coverage for radiant skin. Next, use a concealer to spot conceal your blemishes. Eldridge spends a good deal of time applying concealer with a tiny brush to cover the spot, then she blends outward to ensure the coverage appears seamless.

Blush and Bronzer
You don’t want to leave your face looking one-dimensional with just the foundation and concealer, so you add some color with blush and bronzer. Though liquid foundation is recommended for acne prone skin, gel, liquid or cream blushes and bronzers are not suggested. Rather, stick to powder products when adding color to your face. Additionally, sticking to a matte powder product is your best bet as matte colors do not enhance the appearance of pores the way that shimmery products do.

As with any skin type, it may take a lot of trial and error before you find products that work with your skin. If you want to get a jump on figuring out what products may work best for you, stay tuned to your favorite Vine Vera channels for a comprehensive list of skin care and makeup products as well as their ingredients.

Resveralife Look Well: Beautiful Shades to Try for Spring

Trends change from season to season and year to year. One trend that remains constant each year is that spring means the return of color. Spring is the perfect time to experiment with different hues in everything from your clothing to your eyeshadow. This spring, beuaty editors and bloggers are loving unique colors. Luckily, spring 2015 has a color for everyone whether you feel like going bold and bright with your makeup or you want to remain a bit more neutral. This Look Well Guide from Resveralife highlights the super hot shades to try for spring.

Eye shadows with lilac shadow

Lilac
Last year one of the hottest colors for spring was lilac. This shade stood the test of time and is making a huge return this year. The great thing about lilac is that pretty much all eye colors can rock this universal shade for spring. Lilac looks especially enticing on brown, green or hazel eyes, though don’t shy away from trying it if you are blue-eyed. This color can be worn on the eyes as a sheer wash of sweet purple, or can be deepened to be a vibrant purple.

Woman with mint makeup on her eyes.

Mint
Most people agree that spring is the perfect time for pastel colors. These soft yet fun colors are great to experiment with and one of the most popular spring pastels is mint. Mint may seem like a daunting choice for your eyes, but there are several ways to try out this trend without looking like Shrek. As with lilac, perhaps the easiest and least scary way to wear this color is to use a small amount on the lids for a sheer pop of color. If even that sounds like too much for you, try using a mint liner on your lower waterline. You know that a nude or peach liner on the lower waterline brightens the eye and mint will do the same. Using mint this way is a subtle, yet fun way to bring a bit of color to your eye makeup.

Woman with electric blue makeup on her eyes.

Baby Blue and Electric Blue
This color may conjure up scary images of the 80s, but the baby blue picked for spring 2015 is a bit softer and more metallic than the shocking blue popular in the 80s. Additionally, beauty experts suggest using this on the lid, close to the lash line and blending out with a more neutral color for the most wearable look.

Electric blue may be a bit harder to work into your everyday routine if you work in a conservative setting or if you are a bit too timid for bold colors. For those brave enough to try, you can use electric blue shadow all over the lid or grab a liner. The ever-popular feline flick looks super modern when completed with an electric blue pencil.

Woman with rose gold eye makeup and a yellow rose on her hair.

Rose Gold
Rose gold is the perfect eyeshadow choice for those who favor more neutral colors such as taupe and champagne. This shade compliments the romantic vibe that spring brings. It’s also great for those with dress codes at work or those who want to make another facial feature the focal point of their look. Try rose gold eyeshadow with an almost neon pink lip for a flirty spring look and a beautiful glow.

Woman with olive green eye makeup.

Olive Green
Olive green, like rose gold, is an excellent choice for those who want to play with colors but aren’t quite ready to commit to a shocking blue. Olive green is a great transition into the world of color and can be worn on any eye color. Apply all over the lid and blend out using a soft brown.

Though spring is usually associated with lighter, more pastel leaning colors, that fact doesn’t mean you have to store your darker colors. One of the biggest trends for spring 2015 is finding deep colors that have a duotone effect. This gives you double the interest on your eyes without adding any time to your morning routine. Additionally, peacock green and burgundy are colors that beauty experts are raving about for this spring. Resveralife recommends you to experiment with different colors, techniques and refresh your beauty routine.

Futuristic Beauty Innovations

Often the word technology conjures up thoughts of scientific discoveries and major medical breakthroughs. It isn’t often that the beauty and cosmetic industry come to mind when thinking of technological innovations. However, the beauty industry is making some impressive innovations that will take your beauty game to the next level. From capsules for perfume to wrinkle erasing wipes, the future of your vanity is closer than you think. Resveralife examines the future of beauty innovations in this article.

There are tons of women who use makeup removing wipes at the end of the day to remove makeup from their skin. They are quick, easy and efficient. Wouldn’t it be great if you could remove wrinkles and unwanted lines from your skin as easily as you remove your makeup? Advancements in beauty are making this a possibility. There is a botulinum toxin, known as Revance, that is a wipe-on treatment. This facial wipe and anti-aging treatment works when the botulinum toxin is carried through the skin by a chemical peptide. Soon your medicine cabinet could contain a beauty product that quite literally wipes away your wrinkles.

In addition the Revance wipes, dermatologists are working on a patch that would help to plump skin without the need for injections. A hyaluronic acid path is being developed that will eliminate the need to visit the doctor for injections that improve the appearance of your skin.

One of the most buzzed about treatments for a range of services from hair removal to eye surgery is lasers. Currently only available in dermatology offices, the GentleWaves System is a yellow light treatment that stimulates the growth of collagen. Experts believe it is only a matter of time before this technology is available for home use by consumers. Lasers are also expected to provide relief from unwanted hair, sun spots, wrinkles and fine lines and even acne.

Pills are also speculated to be a prominent part of the future of beauty. Gleevec, a drug used among Leukemia patients, is known to restore hair color in some people. With further research and experimentation, experts hope that in the near future you will be able to simply pop a pill to keep gray hair away. Pills are also predicted to take the place of your liquid sunscreen. You may have the option to simply pop a pill when you know you are going to be in the sun for a prolonged period of time. Perfume may also be a pill to swallow in the morning with your coffee. Perfume pills will work through secreting scent from the pores, continuously maintaining your signature scent. Because your smile is important, there will soon be a pill designed to increase the hardness of teeth and prevent cavities.

The future of beauty is much closer than you may think. Soon, you will be able to stock your medicine cabinet with a variety of pills instead of potions and powders. From oral healthcare to unwanted wrinkles, the future of beauty seems to be largely available in the form of a pill. Additionally, devices such as lasers will be far more accessible to consumers, meaning that the costly trips to the doctors office can come to an end.

Woman with freckles on her face.

Freckle Removal Procedures: Truth or Fiction?

Freckles may be cute on young children, but as you age they can become less than adorable. Caused by a combination of genetics and environmental contributions, freckles are a sometimes unwanted. Read this post from Resveralife to find out what freckles are and if it is possible to remove them.

What are Freckles?
Freckles are spots of pigmentation of the skin and are most often seen in people with very fair skin. Generally, freckles are brown and tan in color, though they can appear yellow, red and black depending on the individual. Freckles are flat spots that frequently appear on the face and areas of the upper body, such as arms and chest. Freckles are harmless, though there are very rare instances in which a freckle can be an indication of skin cancer.

Freckles are small dots, often no bigger than the size of the head of a nail. They are caused by an increase in the amount of melanin in the skin. Melanin is a pigment in the skin, it is the pigment responsible for a body’s ability to tan. Freckles are categorized into one of two types: simple or sunburn. Simple freckles are often round, small and a tan color. Sunburn freckles tend to have a more irregular shape, are darker and are larger than simple freckles. The placement of sunburn freckles also differs from simple freckles. Sunburn freckles appear on the places that suffer from the most severe sunburns: the back and the chest.

While exposure to sun is a cause of freckles, there is also a matter of genetics. Some individuals are more likely to develop freckles than others. Studies conducted about hereditary and freckles suggest that freckles are strongly correlated to genetics and people with fair skin and blond or red hair are most likely to develop freckles.

Freckle Removal
While most people just accept their freckles, there are some who want to lighten or completely remove them for a more even complexion and skin tone. Advancements in technology have made the removal of sunburn freckles possible. The procedure for removing unwanted freckles is known as laser freckle removal.

Laser freckle removal targets the melanin in the skin, which is the pigment in freckles. The pigment then absorbs the light emitted by the laser and the pigment in freckles heats up and breaks down into smaller pieces. These small particles of pigment are removed from the skin through the body’s natural process of exfoliation.

Often, laser freckle removal takes about four to five sessions to see optimal results. Everyone’s treatment varies, but laser sessions generally last from 30 to 45 minutes. The procedure is very low-risk and patients are able to return to normal activities, including makeup application, immediately. Laser freckle removal is effective in almost 100% of patients. However, it is important to think of laser freckle removal as a process that is similar to professional teeth whitening. While the results are significant and visible, the longevity of the results depends largely upon whether or not skin is well cared for after the procedure. Because sunburn freckles are a result of sun exposure, most people will require annual maintenance treatments as complete avoidance of sun exposure is a near impossibility.

Resveralife Look Well: Best Foods to Deal with Acne

Are you one of those suffering from acne? Acne doesn’t just happen in the face, it can happen over your entire body and you might need some changes in your lifestyle to help you get over it. Acne is ugly to look and can stop you from having that clean and smooth skin. In fact, acne can change the entire texture of a face, and have others smirking at you.

While there are a number of people who believe that acne treatment creams are the solution, one of the best ways to get rid of acne is to bring in a change in your food habits. Here is what you can do when it comes to dealing with acne and bidding it adieu.

Dealing with acne

Being one of the most common and troublesome skin problems of them all, acne can cause extensive damage to your skin if not treated on time. Use these natural ways to control the acne and give way to smooth and soft skin in the comfort of your house.

  • Apple cider vinegar – This is one of the best ingredients to control acne as it helps in killing the acne-causing bacteria present on the skin. The vinegar dries up excess oil, balances the skin’s pH and becomes alkaline, thereby making it difficult for the bacteria to survive. Mix one part vinegar with 3 parts water. Dip a cotton ball in this mix and apply on the affected area. Let it rest for a few minutes and then rinse off with cool water. Apply 3 to 4 times daily and use a good moisturizer after rinsing off the vinegar each time.
  • Yogurt or milk – Dairy products such as yogurt or milk can help reduce acne on the skin. They contain antibacterial properties, nourish the skin with their fat content and also remove dirt and oil build-up. Apply room temperature milk or yogurt on the acne and let it rest for 15 minutes. When done, scrub the area to get rid of dead skin cells and allow new ones to reach the skin’s surface. Wash off with water and apply a moisturizer.
  • Egg whites – The white of eggs help reduce acne and also fade scars. Egg whites are full of proteins and vitamins and rebuild damaged skin cells quickly. They also soak up excess oil from the skin. Take the white from 2 eggs and whisk till it becomes frothy. Let it sit on the affected area for 10 minutes. Apply 2 to 3 layers of the same at an interval of 5 minutes each for best results. Finally rinse off after 15 more minutes and pat dry. Apply a good-quality moisturizer when done.
  • Cinnamon and honey mask – Honey and cinnamon make a great combination to combat acne-prone skin. Being loaded with antimicrobial properties, cinnamon helps to stop the bacteria from spreading while honey’s antibiotic properties wipe out the acne from its roots. Mix a teaspoon of cinnamon powder with 2 tablespoons of honey to get a smooth paste. Apply paste on affected area and let it rest for 10 minutes. When done, rinse off with cold water and pat dry.
  • Papaya – Papayas are a great anti-acne remedy which remove dead skin cells and extra lipids from the skin and make it smoother than before. It contains an enzyme named papain which reduces inflammation and pus which is caused due to acne. Simply mash a slice of fresh papaya and apply to affected area. Rinse off after 15 minutes and moisturize afterwards.

Resveralife Look Well: Holiday Look Inspiration

The holidays are here, and it’s time to begin thinking about how you can look your absolute best for the season. Tip 1: Get Plenty of Rest

Whether or not you realize it, getting enough sleep can be a major component to your overall look. When you lack in getting enough sleep, things such as dark circles under the eyes, tired skin, dull skin, and other skin conditions can ensue. To look and feel your best, be sure to sleep for at least 8-10 hours per night for a refreshed appearance.

Tip 2: Stay Hydrated

Be sure to drink enough water. Products such as coffee, sodas, and even tea can dry out your skin and even dehydrate your body due to caffeine. Try to at least increase your water intake to 8 glasses per day on top of other beverages, and if possible, cut back on the main culprits listed above to avoid potential dehydration.

Tip 3: Nourish Your Skin

Be sure to moisturize your skin on a daily basis – this includes the entire body, not just your face. During these Holiday months, our skin has the ability to become dried out due to the climate change and other factors. Avoid dry, itchy skin by applying a good daily moisturizer – and be sure to take your vitamins, including Vitamin E, C, and Biotin supplements for optimal skin health.

Tip 4: Try out Some New Hairstyles

Getting a new, fresh Holiday look – or a few – is simple and easy to do with practice. If you don’t want to go the drastic route and opt for something such as a cut or color, learn to do some new hairstyles on yourself that are quick and easy. You’ll be amazed how simple many of these looks are to achieve, and how much they can change your appearance for the better.

Tip 5: Buy a New Coat

Sometimes, something as simple as a new coat for the Holiday season can really spice up any outfit. No matter the style you like, a new coat offers you a fashionable way to stay warm all throughout the Holiday season – and can dramatically change an outfit from cute and stylish, to va va voom!

Tip 6: Wear Seasonable Color Schemes

One of the easiest ways to look your best this Holiday season is to be sure you wear colors that match the Holiday’s theme, or at least coincide with the theme. For instance, Christmas colors that look fantastic are red, evergreen, silver, gold, black, navy blue, and whites of different shades.

Woman with seasonal makeup colors like shimmer eye makeup and red lips and nails

Tip 7: Seasonal Cosmetic Colors – Wear Them

Adding a bit of flair to your face is a great way to look your best. By doing something as simple as switching your color palate or incorporating more of the festive looks for the season into your cosmetic regimen, you can’t go wrong and will look fab! Eyeshadow colors and eye liners, along with lipstick shades, are the two most important cosmetic components for the season. Try using some metallic colors for more of a shimmer, or actual shimmer products themselves. Glitter is also complimentary for the holidays. Lipsticks in red or berry shades make for a perfect Holiday look.

Easy as Pie

Try some of these simple steps to look your best, and you can’t go wrong. Simple and easy to complete on your own, you’ll be amazed at the transformation things this small can make in your appearance.

Resveralife Examines the Relationship Between Red Wine and Acne

Red wine contains an antioxidant that is believed to help in the treatment of acne. Vine Vera reviews a new study which states that red wine is a major enemy of acne because of the presence of an antioxidant known as Resveratrol. Resveratrol has certain acne-fighting properties and is usually found in the skin of red grapes. Thus, this ingredient automatically finds its way into red wine and it hinders the growth of the bacteria which causes acne.

Resveratrol is the same substance that has become one of the “darling ingredients” of the skin care world because of its anti-aging benefits. Many doctors have also recommended drinking red wine because of the health-heart properties that Resveratrol has to offer. Furthermore, Resveratrol prevents the growth of free radicals that can cause tissue or cell damage in the body.

This study was conducted by researchers from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). According to a report in The Independent Journal, the UCLA experts tested the acne fighting properties of red wine by using the blood samples of healthy volunteers who did not have such skin conditions. It used this blood to test the ability of Resveratrol in inhibiting the growth of acne causing bacteria and found that Resveratrol was actually effective. However, it is important to note that the best acne fighters were not just centered around Resveratrol. The report suggests that the best results were derived when Resveratrol was used in combination with Benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide basically works by creating free radicals which kill the acne-causing bacteria.

The team grew acne-causing bacteria and then used different combinations of Benzoyl peroxide and Resveratrol to see which combinations worked the best. These cultures were monitored for 10 days to record the level of bacteria growth or bacteria killing. Benzoyl peroxide displayed a great ability to kill acne-causing bacteria in all concentrations, but its effects were short lived. On the other hand, Resveratrol did not display a decent killing capability, but it managed to inhibit bacteria growth for a longer period of time.

Initially, experts were against combining Resveratrol and Benzoyl peroxide because Resveratrol is a known anti-oxidant and Benzoyl peroxide is an oxidant. Thus, it was thought that they would cancel out each other’s effects. However, reports suggest that this was not the case. They proved to be a formidable combination because they portrayed anti-bacterial activity in the initial stages as well as a sustained bacterial growth inhibition.

According to Dr. Emma Taylor, one of the researchers associated with the UCLA study, the study shows that combining antioxidants with oxidants can enhance the effectiveness of each ingredient in fighting bacteria over a long period of time. This study should also lead to the development of acne treatments that are less invasive.

Dr. Jenny Kim, the professor of clinical medicine at the Geffen School, states that adding these two ingredients was quite similar to combining the best ingredients from both words and using a two-pronged attack to deal with acne-causing bacteria.

Taylor mentioned that she hopes that their findings lead to the development of a new category of acne therapies are based on antioxidants. The next steps of this research involve laboratory testings to better understand both compounds and their acne-fighting capabilities.
